Sound of Trouble

Kirby, See Magazine

"Ahh, Kevin Cook…," those in the know smile mindfully, smug people who are part of a secret club. Those who've heard Kevin Cook are aware that we have this world-class songwriter right here in River City. There are a lot of punters who are not in the loop, but this new album may change all that...

Trouble Light is Cook's third release, if you count 1998's Live at the Winspear, a solo performance recorded by Rick Fenton. It was counted by musicologist Neil MacGonigill, a member of the aforementioned club, who still maintains that recording should be released wide.

Kevin Cook and Christine Hanson"That one was just sold offstage as a limited edition," Cook humbly states. As well, he's as modest about his songwriting as he is his records. "I guess I've been in a prolific phase… by now it's a bit more than a habit, it's like breathing after a while, just something you do."

No lofty claims are made as his impetus or defined as Cook's muse, just pieces of his life: "I am a bit of an observer." Once inspired, "I'll usually have a guitar in my hand and then I'm at the kitchen table where I can have stuff out all over the place."

Guitar in hand is an important part of his sentence, because this is what separates Cook from the rest of the songwriting pack; he's his own great accompanist. From solid rhythm-playing to smooth soloing to fine finger-picking, he's an excellent guitar player. His playing did not suffer from "Jerry Garcia-ing" his left hand on a table saw nearly 10 years ago; hence his handle "the three-fingered guitarist."

This Trouble Light of a troubadour was recorded at CKUA because Cook was keen to do a project with Dan Cherwoniak. "He liked my other record and he knew the equipment up there quite well," smiles Cook. Cherwoniak even ended up singing backup on the album. "He's a hell of singer – he's got a great voice and great ears."
