Hot on the heels of his popular release, Trouble Light, KEVIN COOK released WESTERN UNION. Produced in Edmonton, in June 2003, with engineer/bass player KORY BURNS, it's a collection of eleven original songs stripped down to the bare essentials. Recorded mostly live in the studio, this country blues flavored disc has a big acoustic sound and covers a lot of roots territory. "I went back and listened to some of my early influences when I was writing this album, people like J.J.Cale, Doc Watson, Norman Blake and Rev. Gary Davis." From the gospel blues groove of "Revelation Blues" to the ragtime bounce of Lemon Grove to the more traditional country bluegrass strains of "Cora-Mae" and "Early Girl", Cook has come up with a sound that is unmistakably his own.

Juno award-winning harmonica ace RUSTY REED joins Cook in the studio. He's played with the likes of Otis Rush, B.B.King and Los Lobos. Reed is a longtime member of the Edmonton Folk Festival's house band alongside Amos Garrett. "I've known Rusty for years, we were always crossing paths in the blues clubs but never got a chance to play together till now." String wizard CAM NEUFELD also contributes some fine mandolin tracks. WESTERN UNION reaffirms Cook's reputation as a world-class artist. Hear why.

Recorded on tape in a digital age, TROUBLE LIGHT is a moody collection of songs about struggle and hope tempered with an offbeat sense of humour. Inspired by short stories, modern poetry and sounds from around the world, the lyrics have a personal narrative quality and the music has a strong rhythmic sense. He demonstrates versatility playing acoustic, bottleneck, e-bow and electric guitars. Self-produced in a bare-bones style with subtle cello, bass and percussion arrangements, this critically acclaimed recording exposes Kevin Cook’s strengths as a writer and musician.
